Vacationing With Your Dog
With a little extra planning before you leave for vacation, you will find that it is possible to take your dog with you while traveling. No matter how you are traveling, there are ways that can allow you to take your beloved pooch with you.
Most of the major airlines accept dogs and even provide a cage for their travel. Of course, the dog won’t be allowed in the same area of the plane you will be on, but they will be safe where all of the luggage is carried. Call the airline you plan on flying with to make sure of any rules involved with bringing your dog on vacation with you. Make sure to find out the cost so that you can add in into your vacation budget.
If you are traveling by train to your vacation destination, check with the railway you will be traveling with to see if they supply the crate for you or if you need to bring your own for your dog. Large dogs are normally required to travel in the baggage car with all of the other luggage. Smaller dogs may be able to ride along side you, as long as you can keep the dog under control at all times. Again, be sure to check the extra costs involved with taking your dog on the train with you.
If you are traveling in your own car, you have the choice of how your pet rides. You can have the dog ride in it’s own cage or allow it to have the backseat of your car, the choice is yours. Whatever way you choose to travel with your dog, make sure you can get a window down near the dog to allow access to fresh air, but without causing a draft. Drafts have been known to be the cause of eye, ear, and throat conditions with dogs who have been traveling. Also make sure that your dog has plenty of water along the trip to stay hydrated, at least every two hours. While giving them a drink of water you will have the opportunity to exercise their legs a bit. This will also allow then time to relieve themselves, just be sure to always keep the dog on a leash so that they can’t get away and near the traffic of the interstate.
