Things to Have Before You Get a New Puppy
Your new puppy will be more at home in his new environment if the necessities of his life are already in place upon his arrival. To avoid confusion with your new puppy and what is going on with his new home, there are a few items that you can already have to allow you to spend time with your new puppy when he comes home for the first time, instead of hustling around trying to get the things you need for him.Your puppy can live without toys and treats for the first few days as he will find his own things to play with, but he cannot go without food and water, the most important thing in your new puppy‘s life. Make sure to have sturdy, non-breakable dishes for both water and food on hand before bringing your new puppy home.
Make sure that if you purchase a ceramic dish for your new puppy to make sure it has not been fired with a lead-based glaze, as this could cause your puppy to become quite ill from it.Along with the food and water bowls you will want to make sure you have the right formula of puppy food ready to feed to your new addition. Puppies are used to eating on a certain schedule so be sure to find out from breeder how often your puppy is used to eating and at what times of the day.
A collar and leash are necessary to allow the puppy to walk around outside without the fear of him running off or getting out of a yard that wasn’t prepared for a small pup. Go ahead and purchase a collar for the size of the puppy you expect to bring home, keeping in mind that you will most likely have to purchase more collars in the future as your puppy grows.
Another overlooked item to have on hand when your new puppy comes home is a set of tweezers and some quality flea spray that is made for puppies just incase the puppy has external parasites like fleas. You will want to remove any parasites that are visible to you by hand before allowing the puppy to come into your home, so make sure to check it over good before hand because this could easily turn into an infestation of fleas in your home.
Having the right things on hand will help your puppy adjust to it’s new environment and build trust in you as his owner to take proper care of him now and always.
