The German Shephard

german-shephard.jpgThe breed of the German Shephard dog originated by Captain Max von Stephanitz in the late nineteenth century when he saw the unique characteristics which would be perfect for a working dog.It wasn’t until after the Second World War when American and British soldiers brought these dogs home after being amazed by the characteristics these dogs have such as loyalty and the drive and ability to work. The Captains dream of building an all purpose working dog had become a reality overnight. The average German Shephard often weighs between seventy five to ninety pounds and tends to have the same colored coat being grey, tan, black and gold. This is a fairly high maintenance dog as they require a brush on a daily routine and bathed very regularly. Another thing that is essential is a decent long walk every day in order to keep the dog active and fit. The German Shephard in today’s world is often used as a great pet as they have great loyalty and the instinct to protect its owners; they are also great with kids and other animals. The average life expectancy this breed of dog is around twelve years.

The German Shephard has had many roles as times have changed, in the beginning they were widely used for sheep herding dogs and military dogs. They have also been used as rescue dogs because of their ability to protect and agility. In today’s world the police are said to use this breed of dog to perform such tasks as ‘sniffer dogs’ or to reinforce policemen.
