Dog Breeds 101: The English Cocker Spaniel

The English Cocker Spaniel is one of many of the Spaniel family, they closely resemble their cousin, the American Cocker Spaniel. They are a specific breed of gun dog used to flush out birds that were within shooting range. Cocker Spaniels must be very alert and trained to be responsive to hand signals given by the owner.Cocker Spaniels have gained a few common nicknames such as the cocker or the merry cocker because of their general chirpiness and friendly well being towards other animals and humans. They come in an array of different colors but show dogs are restricted to certain colors. Make sure you check the terms and conditions before entering your dog into any type of show.

The average male cocker spaniel is 15 to 17 inches tall and weigh around 28 to 34 lbs with the average bitch weighing 15 to 16 inches and is about 27 to 32 lbs in weight. Breeders tend to dock their tails to 4 to 5 inches in length but cocker spaniels used as show dogs have them cut off closer to the body.

The most common health issues that cocker spaniels are prone to are shyness, deafness, skin allergies, aggression towards other dogs and humans, cataracts and benign tumours. Cocker spaniels have a general life span of around 11 to 12 years with the most common cause of death being either old age or cancer.

Cocker spaniels are known to be very friendly, playful, faithful, affectionate and quiet. They tend not to be mischievous and are easily trained. Even though they were bred as a working dog, cocker spaniels also make a great household pet.

You should always keep a close eye on your cocker spaniel, especially if used as a hunting dog to ensure you get the full potential out of it. If you suspect any injuries or issues contact your vet as soon as possible.
