Dog Breeds 101: The English Bulldog
The Bulldog originated from England, hence the alternative names British Bulldog and English Bulldog. They are a well built stocky breed with short limbs and a solid body, the most noticeable feature with bulldogs is the saggy skin on the face and short muzzle which tends to make the dog appear unhappy or frowning. They come in a huge range of different colours with none being more predominate, so it just depends on the markings of the mother and father of the pup.
The bulldog is known to have a reasonable nice and friendly temperament towards other dogs and people being very docile and loyal. In some cases it’s known that they are aggressively loyal to their owner which can be seen as a danger. Bulldog breeders are in the process of trying to breed aggression out of them making them more friendly and suitable as household pets.
Bulldogs can be very high maintenance animals and become so attached to its owners that they won’t leave their side, they won’t even venture outside without a human by its side in extreme cases.
Bulldogs are prone to some common health issues due to the shape of their lower jaw and stocky build. They are also known to snore in their sleep which can be irritating for the owners. They are prone to having cysts between their toes which will cause them great discomfort but can be easily treated by any experienced owner or your local vet.
In order to reduce the chance of any facial infections bulldogs require of their face folds and a soft toothbrush to get rid of any unwanted grime and moisture. Like any other breed they require daily exercise to keep them fit and healthy. This is essential for bulldogs because if they gain too much weight it can cause heart and lung problems in the future.
